This article looks at a study that shows children who don’t identify within the traditional gender binaries, or do not conform to their gender assigned at birth, already feel a strong sense of their actual gender identity from a very young age. Children who identify with a gender that does not correspond to the one assigned at birth already more accurately identify with the opposing gender even before the transition process has begun. The article also outlines several other studies which help strengthen the researcher's arguments.
By studying the 85 gender-nonconforming children she recruited, her team has now shown, in two separate ways, that those who go on to transition do so because they already have a strong sense of their identity...This study provides further credence to guidance that practitioners and other professionals should affirm—rather than question—a child’s assertion of their gender, particularly for those who more strongly identify with their gender,” says Russell Toomey from the University of Arizona.
